I'll get back to game testing some day.
'Some day' being the operative words there.

I've been wanting to play this game, and luckily, I've got my cousin's copy on hand to play I might get around to it some time too... xD
Edit: So yeah, some precursory testing on the intro stuff shows that 1.9 - 1.12 still freeze after the intro if Start isn't pressed. 1.11 and 1.12 don't have the "left side of the screen" problem though.

Game Title: Brave Fencer Musashi Game ID(s): SLUS_007.26 pSX Version(s): Played through using 1.12, performed freeze and XA audio testing on 1.1 - 1.12
CD vs Image: While playing from the CD directly, it appears I need to give the emulator a kick in the butt by using the fast forward button before it can get past the aforementioned clip freezes. I have tried waiting without pressing the fast forward button for about 2 minutes (way longer than should be necessary, even for a regular PlayStation's loading time), and it didn't progress. After I pressed the fast forward, it finally started moving.
Using CD images, I am unable to get by the freezing, even by fast forwarding. I ripped a CloneCD image of the game at 1.0x with weak sector scanning enabled in Alcohol 52%, so I doubt it's a problem with the rip itself. I doubt it's a problem with the disc either, as it looks undamaged (and plays perfectly anyway). Another oddity with regards to CD images is that using a virtual drive doesn't seem to work in getting past the clip freezes.
Basically, using a CD image, I can confirm marxmann05's previous report, and it turns out the problem wasn't caused by the use of save states, since I've been using memory card saves throughout the game.
CD images are a big nono for this game. It's probably worth looking into these "works using [CD|image] but doesn't work using [image|CD]" compatibility problems, as they're more annoying to track down (since not everyone has the time to test two different mediums). I just got lucky when I tested the CD and happened to press the fast forward button out of impatience for the apparent hang.
IoControl vs ASPI: Both IoControl and ASPI exhibit the freezing until I press fast forward. IoControl appears to play the game more-or-less perfectly otherwise.
ASPI, on the other hand, has funky issues with playing XA audio... funky as in it's sorta stuttering, though I think it may be more than just stuttering (lol not sure how else to describe it). I'm not sure if it's a problem with my ASPI layer though (I'm using Nero's, and haven't tried ForceASPI).
Freeze Points: 1) After the intro FMV 2) After the FMV following chapter 3's boss 3) After the "battle" against Topo, after you walk up the spiraling metal path (immediately before the battle against the last Crest Guardian) [save state and memory card save (save state for pSX 1.12 only)] 4) After the Princess gets blown away during the whole Wizard of Darkness scene (?)
I'm not sure if there were other points at which the game might freeze at, but these are the only ones I actually experienced.
Notes: I played the entire game through using pSX 1.12 only. I conducted the freeze testing on the other versions (1.1 to 1.11) only by checking the behavior for freeze point 1, and sometimes freeze point 3 as well. Whatever the case, they all behaved identically, so I'd assume they all work as well. If anything, though, 1.1 and 1.2 had some funky fast forwarding issues related to VSync (IIRC), so it'd be a pain to try and play through using those versions
Compatibility Evaluation: Nearly perfect. Run the game from CD (preferably using IoControl). If it looks like it's frozen on a black screen, fast forward for a second or two, then let go.
Opinion: The game felt tedious at times, as some things felt like they were stuck in just for the sake of making the game long/hard/difficult/annoying. Other than that, SquareSoft was (is?) skilled at making amusing and entertaining games. Or maybe I'm just too easily amused/entertained?
Would I recommend the game? Not for everyone, but if you feel like killng time, and enjoy playing hack'n'slash-styled action/puzzle/RPG type games, do try
