 Xenogears problem I had
« Thread Started on Jan 26, 2008, 2:17pm »

Game Title: Xenogears
Game ID(s): SLUS_006.64
pSX Version(s): v1.13

In the near beginning of the game when Fei chases after Citan in the desert, after you beat the two Kislev gears in the Weltall and are introduced to graf, the display freezes once it goes into the cutscene. The sound and game itself keep on playing; however, the display is still on the cutscene. I haven't tried any switches or anything, but I was mainly just letting you know what was going on. If anybody has encountered this prior to now and I didn't see the thread, you've my apologies.

Oh, I'm not sure if it matters, but my game is a black label rather than the greatest hits.

Well, the only Game ID difference between your black label game and my Greatest Hits, westicles, is that mine are SLUS-00664GH and SLUS-00669GH - since the only variation is the GH suffix, this suggests they're actually the same version. I don't have any such problem with mine.

Are you playing from the CDs or from an image and, if an image, what format - and how did you rip it? Also, what BIOS are you using?

Yeah I guess that info would help, huh? lol

It was from a CDZ image that I made from an ISO rip (MagicISO) from my disc. I didn't even think the actual disc would make a difference, though. When I get back to the house, I'll try that. I'm using the SCPH1001 BIOS.

Xenogears used to be a problem game in pSX, although it's fine now, westicles. The fix for the problems used to be to play from the CDs.

Although, pSX recognises the .iso image format, it's probably the worst one to use in pSX: without a descriptor file (.cue, .ccd etc). pSXoften has trouble with multi track images, and sometimes, it seems with even deciding what disc format the .iso actually is. .bin/.cue will work quite satisfactorily with many games, but the best formats are CloneCD's .ccd/.img/.sub and Alcohol's .mdf/.mds ones, as these formats also include subcode from the CD. I'd recommend ripping your CDs again to a better format - see the HOW TO: Make Disc Images thread.

I'm having a similar problem with this game. It runs throught the intro just fine, but I get up to the part in the beginning when the village is attacked and it does the animated segment, and the movie will run for a few seconds and then freeze, while the sound continues. Running off a .ccd/.img/.sub at the moment. SCPH1001 BIOS, though I tried running through every other BIOS I could dig up, and it didn't make a difference...

What version of the emulator are you using, jayibero, and how did you rip your images? See the HOW TO: Make Disc Images thread for good advice on ripping. In particular, don't rip at full speed - try about 1/2 the drive's maximum speed, and use an -RW drive rather than a -ROM one; they're better at reading non-standard CDs like Playstation ones.

You could also try playing from the original CDs, or mounting your images and playing them as CDs.

Game title: Xeno Gears
Game ID: SLUS_006.64
BIOS: scph1001.bin

I can confirm this. I'm using a ripped ISO image of the game. Black screen and stalls right before the fight scene in the village. I'm using version 1.13 of pSX. I'll play it through using a different Image format and report if the stall still occurs.

I just used the same ISO image and mounted it using PowerISO version 3.7. It ran fine this time. It could be as patrick stated earlier regarded ISO images...or it could be something else altogether.

There used to be an issue in Xenogears where it would only run properly if run from the CDs or mounted images. This has been fixed, however - my .ccd/.img/.sub images of the game run directly in pSX without problems.

If you're still getting problems in pSX version 1.13, I'd suspect faulty images.

@sulblazer: .iso is not a good format to use for Playstation game images: the format neither includes a descriptor file nor the subcode from the CD. pSX needs the subcode to defeat copy or mod protection (not uncommon in PAL games, but less often found in in NTSC-US games), and without a descriptor file, may have problems identifying the CD format and locating tracks within the image.

.bin/.cue will often suffice for unprotected games, but the best formats are CloneCD's .ccd/.img/.sub and Alcohol's .mdf/.mds.

I often get this issue on cut scenes and I'm playing using the actual Xenogears CD.
I also have v1.12 installed on my PC, I generally have to make a state save before each cut scene... then load it using 1.12 and view the cutscene and go back to 1.13, although sometimes the cutscenes go through just fine.

But, now one of the cut scenes won't play in either version... it goes for a couple of seconds then just freezes each time. The sounds continue though, and after a while I start hearing sounds from various other cut scenes on the disc.

EDIT: Since posting... I haven't had any more issues.

charismatic, we need more info than what you're providing. According to patrickp, the game runs fine, although apparently he never gave me a proper report about it. :P

Hey!

I'm running pretty much the same version as everyone else.. I don't know if this issue is strictly based on the fact that I'm playing from the cd on my computer but wondering if anyone is having issues saving the game. I can't save my game haha. I've tried v 1.10 of psx and 1.13, on same bios SCPH1001, not sure on my ID # since I am running from the disc and not the image. Thanks in advance.

~Split
P.S. I realize this post is about a year old but was the only one I could find that's relevant to my game
