 BIOS Information
« Thread Started on Feb 24, 2007, 3:31pm »

Yup, it's another little mini-project. This one rather requires participation from others, so I hope y'all can help out here.

Inside every PSX BIOS, the exact date and version are mentioned. To see this, open the BIOS itself in something like Notepad/Wordpad (I use Wordpad as it loads larger files much faster than Notepad), and scroll all the way to the bottom. About 10 lines or so from the bottom, you'll see a line that contains the System ROM Version, followed by the date it was created. What I'd like is for everybody to open up each of their PSX BIOS files and report that information.

Note: When I tried this with SCPH1000.bin, there was no such information at all. An interesting note about that is that when you're viewing the file, if you scroll all the way to the top, just about every BIOS will say "Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. CEX-3000/1001/1002 by K.S."... But in SCPH1000.bin, what you find is "Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. CEX-1000 KT-3 by S.O.", which I really find to be interesting. The impression I get from that is that the SCPH-1000 BIOS is unique, with no following BIOS actually being based on it, and that all BIOS are actually based on SCPH-1001. The data inside SCPH1000.bin also looks pretty different from all the other BIOS (which share nearly identical-looking code). The theory would explain why emulators have such trouble running the SCPH-1000 BIOS. Anyway... I'm starting to get off track here, as interesting as that is (and I *do* invite any conversation about it... as it *is* very interesting...).

Anyway, here is my list so far. As people present their results, I will add/modify the list here as necessary. For best results, just copy/paste the information exactly as I'm doing, and don't forget to include the letter that comes after the date (which seems to indicate the region that the BIOS comes from). To note, by looking at my list here to start, you can easily see that some of the names they were given are clearly incorrect

- DTLH-3002: System ROM Version 2.2 12/04/95 E
- SCPH-1000: (Information not available)
- SCPH-1001: System ROM Version 2.2 12/04/95 A
- SCPH-1002: System ROM Version 2.0 05/10/95 E
- SCPH-3500: System ROM Version 2.1 07/17/95 J
- SCPH-5000: System ROM Version 2.2 12/04/95 J

- SCPH-7001: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 A
- SCPH-7003: System ROM Version 3.0 11/18/96 A
- SCPH-7502: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 E
- SCPH-9001: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 A (Verified by Haldrie)
- SCPH-9002: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 E (Verified by Shendo)

- SCPH-102: System ROM Version 4.4 03/24/00 E (Verified by vigi)

And, I've decided that upon looking at that line near the top that I was talking about, I'm gonna start a list for that too. Some of what I was seeing caught my attention, so I'd like to collect data on that too. I would appreciate information from everybody for this list too, but the list above is my main priority, so if you're gonna provide information for just one list, I'd prefer information for the above list.

I own a SCPH-7501 PlayStation (US) but I don't have the tools to dump the bios and I haven't been able to find it on the internet.

- SCPH-1001: System ROM Version 2.2 12/04/95 A
- SCPH-7001: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 A
- SCPH-7502: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 E

- SCPH-7502: CEX-3000/1001/1002 by K.S.

And that is all I have.

In case you or someone else plans to do this for PS2 bioses, here's the same info from mine. Looks like the version number isn't updated anymore even if date changes. The system rom version is not near the end of the file it seems, but it's easy to find by using the find in any txt editor.

SCPH-10000: System ROM Version 5.0 01/17/00 T
SCPH-30004: System ROM Version 5.0 10/04/01 E
SCPH-39001: System ROM Version 5.0 02/07/02 A
SCPH-70004: System ROM Version 5.0 06/14/04 E

I've been using SCPH-7001 although the fronend says it's a US bios. Strange how all the us bios listed here aren't labeled as such. All the supposed US bios are labeled A. The only one that could be A for sure is SCPH-7003. I noticed a pattern in the numbers where the last number seem to represent the region (0=J, 1=U, 2=E and 3=A) at least that is what I have noticed based on labels from other sources.

Yeah, that's how it should be. I really can't see how a SCPH1001 is an Asian BIOS, for example, so I doubt this information is wholly reliable...

I assumed that A stands for American. And as such would make sense on most of the stuff listed here.

Thank you patrickp and everybody who has contributed so far. That verifies some things, and raises a few more questions, so we're far from done here (though we're doing quite well so far).

@patrickp: Like... your SCPH-1002 BIOS. Well... maybe that one throws SCPH-1001 into question, because the Playstation hardware was released in America almost a month before its release in Europe. And that Playstation BIOS is dated before either place's release. And... if SCPH-1001 is the original, why is it showing a date three months after the US release? I would almost guess that, based on our information so far, SCPH-1001 would *actually* be SCPH-5001. That would make DTLH-3002 actually SCPH-5002. And SCPH-7003 is probably actually SCPH-5501. And we have the same information for what is named SCPH-5502 on my computer and SCPH-5552 on your computer. Now I assume that SCPH-5552 is real and is some revision of SCPH-5502. So at this point it could be either one (going by the upgrade date trends that some of the others follow by version across regions).

These changes I don't want to make to the master list until either more input is received, or someone possibly sheds some light on this topic.

Yeah, I was pretty much figuring from the start that A stands for America (which makes a lot of sense, considering it's "America" that's in the name of Sony's American branch). Now... What I'd like to see is an actual Asian BIOS. Because obviously the SCPH-7003 that we have is actually an SCPH-55x1 BIOS. At least though, it seems that we're getting closer to a real list here, and it seems that this list may actually answer a few questions that have plagued the PS1 BIOS discussions.

Everybody seems to have the ROM version missing in scph1000 if you look through the rest of the thread, kinghanco. I would guess that your scph3000 may be a renamed dtlh3000, which is, apparently, one of the Net Yaroze BIOSs. Your scph5000b may be corrupted, but you'll notice looking through the contents of a BIOS you will get some odd looking characters; mostly these are characters representing hexadecimal numbers that aren't represented by commonly used characters. You wouldn't expect to get them within text information in the BIOS, though - the bottom line is, does it work Ok?

I explored some of the bioses I acquired today, from various sources... ::) and here are the revised lists. I put the files in date order.

Firstly, eventhough SCPH-1000 doesn't have the System ROM Version per se, I found this in there.
SCPH-1000: 1.1 1994/01/24

SCPH-1001: System ROM Version 2.2 12/04/95 A
SCPH-1002: System ROM Version 2.2 12/04/95 E
SCPH-5000: System ROM Version 2.2 12/04/95 J
SCPH-5500: System ROM Version 3.0 09/09/96 J
SCPH-7003: System ROM Version 3.0 11/18/96 A
SCPH-5502: System ROM Version 3.0 01/06/97 E
SCPH-7000: System ROM Version 4.0 08/18/97 J
SCPH-7001: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 A
SCPH-7502: System ROM Version 4.1 12/16/97 E
SCPH-101: System ROM Version 4.5 05/25/00 A

Also, I had couple DTLH bioses, but as they all turned out to be identical to other version 2.2 bioses, I trashed them. Either the DTLH stuff is truly identical to those, or they were missnamed. Either way, they were useless.

I would venture a guess that kinghanco's scph3000 version 1.1 is from region free developer tool.

scph5000b.bin - This won't run. (Probably is a bad dump.)

scph5000h.bin - This won't run. (No report on screen. Might be a hack.)

scph5552b.bin - This won't run. (Probably is a bad dump.)

scph3000.bin renamed to dtlh3000.bin. I think it a japanese BIOS. I notice none of my games won't load with this BIOS.

 Re: BIOS Information

What was the URL again to that russian site that hosted a clrmamepro .dat file for PlayStation BIOSes?

I have 12 (out of a possible 17 according to the .dat file) unique BIOS files. All of them pass pSX's built-in BIOS verification.

lol, doing a google search I come up with a post by myself asking for this .dat file on another forum. Here it is:
