 Converter compatibility with pSX
« Thread Started on Jul 10, 2006, 12:13am »

I designed this thread with the intention of having a place for other users to see what various PS1/PS2 converters work fine in pSX, and what one must do to make sure the converter performs its best in pSX. If this thread turns out to be successful, I may add images to let users see what these things look like, but for now it's text only. I'll start the thread with the two converters I own, and if other users can provide information in a similar format to what I have here, I'll add it to this first post:

Converter: 3 in 1 PC JOY BOX

Features:
Allows use of Sega Saturn, PS1/PS2, and Dreamcast controllers

Warnings:
1. Only one controller may be used at once, but there are three inputs for controllers. The converter will not function correctly if more than one controller is plugged in at once.
2. The Dreamcasts' VMU's or other special accessories can't be used.
3. No rumble for Dualshock 1/2 or 'Analog with Rumble' controllers.

Configuration Notes:
No special configuration is necessary for this converter, it makes the PS1/PS2 controller into a regular HID-compliant game input device, and doesn't require a special driver, unless you're using Windows 98.

Availability:
Can be purchased from the manufacturer's website at http://www.mayflash.com/pc/pc015/pc015-1.htm

*Updated with rumble info
Converter: EMS USB2

Features:
When used with a PC, one or two PS1/PS2 controllers may be used, including support dance mats with left/right up/down inputs. Allows use of rumble with Dualshock 1/2 controllers, which works fine in pSX, but currently is unknown to work with 'Analog with Rumble' controllers.

Warnings:
1. For some reason in pSX 1.8, when a controller is set to Dualshock it won't even work at all, keys set with keyboard or anything else.
2. If rumble is on with Dualshock mode in pSX, the gamepad will constantly rumble, but you can turn it off easily with the checkbox. This may be an issue with the driver the manufacturer wrote, or an issue with pSX's rumble code.

Configuration Notes:
Be sure to have the latest driver version, available in the download section at www.hkems.com. You must have 'Mode' set to 'Normal', and 'Digital Pad' set to 'Advance' in the EMS USB Joypad Properties settings, or the emulator will crash at some point in execution, sometimes right when the emulator starts.

Availability:
Can be purchased from the manufacturer's website at www.hkems.com

Converter: SmartJoy PLUS

Features:
You can connect your PS/PS2 joypad, dance pad or racing wheel to your computer and it supports real vibration (Rumble/Force Feedback™).
Use two or more SmartJoy PLUS for multiplayer

Warnings:
1. No rumble using Dualshock2.(the rumble doesn't work that good with epsxe but it works)

Configuration Notes:
Plug and play if you don't want to use the rumble but if you do you will need to install the drivers that come in a disc with the adapter

Availability:
http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=160&products_id=3833&

EDIT: changed a few things.
EDIT2: I was probably doing something wrong before cause now i can play using two adapters and both controllers at the same time.

Converter: "PSX to USB", also known as "Playstation to USB Game Adapter".

Manufactured for Radio Shack. It's a simple $10-15 adapter that allows you to plug in one PSX controller into a USB slot.

I never experienced any problems with it in terms of set up or use.

I only ever used a Dual Shock (grey, from PSX) controller with this adapter, not a Dual Shock 2 (black, from PS2).

And I forgot to note: I did NOT test the rumble feature through this adapter. I'm not much of a rumble fan. :P

Converter/Adaptor: Super Joy Box 11 (XBox Controller Adaptor for Windows)
Drivers: XBCD v1.07

No problems thus far, rumble included. The drivers on the Lik-Sang servers (Tiger something, or May something, don't recall) didn't work, as I could not configure the controller settings properly.

The Microsoft 360 pad DirectInput driver does not support rumble, so thats normal. The only way to get rumble working afaik is to use XInput instead of DirectInput... I will do that eventually (although its annoying to have to write a lot of new code just to support one pad!).

I was using a no-name USB analog/rumble controller which worked Ok except for the rumble - although this works in ePSXe, for instance. From recent comments in this forum, I decided to get a Logitech Rumblepad 2.

100% improvement! First of all, the rumble works if it's set as a Dualshock controller. But additionally, the centre area of the analog sticks is larger, so, for instance, walking as opposed to running is easy in Chrono Cross (I could do it before, but it neeeded a _very_ fine touch). And the excessive sensitivity in menus is very much reduced; I don't keep overshooting selections now.

And it's generally a nice pad. Recommended! ;-)

Edit: whoops, sorry - not actually using a converter...

Converter: Super Dual Box

Best Drivers: http://www.blue-sierra.com/downloads/sdb/SDB%20v9.0.exe

I'd test pSX's abilities to use two controllers on this device, but I can't. Both controllers are given that same name. So when I try selecting the second one for port 2, it just keeps defaulting back to the first one. So no matter what, it only lets me select the first "MP-8866 Dual USB Joypad" that's on the list, even though both are listed. They work at the same time on other emulators (most notably ZSNES, where it's gotten EXTENSIVE testing).

Rumble works, but only with the drivers mentioned above.

The converter otherwise works wonderfully. It has plug-and-play functionality, so no configuration needed (well, Up+Start+Select for dancepad use on Stepmania).

Edit: Updated with actual name, as well as a link to the drivers that allow rumble to work.

I have two Sony Dualshock pads that I use with this dual USB converter from play.com/joytech:

http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/114167/P....XP/Product.html

I haven't been able to get it to work in Vista yet, but it works out of the box in XP without any drivers installed.
With the drivers installed you get support for other controller types (fishing rod!) rumble support and a nice control panel interface - but the rumble doesn't work well with all games, sometimes the pad will keep rumbling until you exit the game. The best way to disable rumble (short of editing the registry) is to not use the drivers.

So far I've only had control problems with one game, 1NSANE from Codemasters (fun off-road driving game), where no matter how I set up the controls in the game, the car would keep steering to the left. Solution was to switch my Dualshock to digital mode and use the thumbpad, which isn't optimal for driving games.

I've been using the adaptor with Shadowgrounds, GTA: Vice City, Toca Race Driver 2, NFSU, FlatOut series, Midnight Club II and many other PC games with no problems. It also works flawlessly in pSX and all the other emulators that I use and have used since I got it.

This is one of those adaptors that allows you to switch from analog to digital mode on-the-fly. If you press the analog button with the control panel open, you can see the 'primary joystick' immediately changes from the D-pad to the left analog thumbstick.

This is a desireable feature, because other adaptors where you can't switch mode, the left analog stick is always the 'primary joystick' and the 4 buttons on the D-pad are seen as firebuttons.
This becomes a problem if you want to use the D-pad in games that don't allow you to remap joystick axis to buttons. For those games you are confined to use the thumbstick, which can be really annoying if you'd rather use the D-pad to control the game.

For this reason I strongly recommend anyone who is looking to buy an adaptor to make sure that it supports on-the-fly switching from digital to analog mode. IE toggling the D-pad and the analog thumbstick to function as 'primary joystick'.

Addendum..

Like gamesoulmaster's adaptor, this one also lists itself twice with the same name - Dual PSX-USB adaptor. But it doesn't seem to create any compatibility issues with anything.

Also, it supports all three types of Dualshock pads (grey white and black) although there's obviously no support for the analog buttons on the PS2 pad - they remain digital.

I've never tried it with any other controller types.

I got that adapter from The Source (aka Radio Shack) and the grey Playstation Dual Shock gamepad. The rumble worked so far, at least in those games compatible with Dual Shock gamepads.

I'll throw this out for anyone who might have it as well.

The PSX/N64 USB Adapter
http://www.jandaman.com/games.mvc?p=n64psxusb&Category_code=PSX

Dance mats are "iffy" and Lightguns don't work at all...but really, who has those anymore?

I had a problem where if you tried to configure the buttons, it would wouldn't work and all the buttons would be marked the same really fast. It's somewhere in this forum, but I have no need to reference it anymore since it works well now.

The only other thing about it is that if you want pSX to recognize the D-Pad as the main movement instead of the Analg Stick (FF-series, 2D Fighters, etc.), then make sure that Analog is on, not off. If off, the D-Pad won't work like that.

Other than that, I'm glad to add it as my gamepad of choice since it works on pSX, ePSXe and PJ64 ;)

Yes, this was a problem with a large number of gamepads, Jesse, but it was easy to work around. You just set the first button, then go back and reset the next one, then go back and reset the next one...

A few people have pads that couldn't do this; they couldn't reset the values - apparently this was usually fixed by manually editing psx.ini.

I think, as you said, it's been fixed now; haven't checked it in the last few versions, though, as I've just been letting the configuration carry over.

Well, fact is that it didn't start working due to upgrading.

I have only started and known v1.10 and that problem was there. Also, that trick you mentioned, I tried it before and it didn't work. It just wouldn't read the pad correctly, but out of the blue, it started to work. Weird, eh?

Anyway, I just wanted to put my two cents in.
