Game Title: Suikoden 2
Game ID(s): SLES_024.42 & SLUS_009.58
pSX Version(s): 1.11
Hey guys,
Not sure if this is allowed but I'd like to suggest an amendment to the compatibility list if I may. I don't know about you lot, but because pSX is by far my favourite emulator, before I get stuck into a game I like to check the compatibility list for info about how it runs. If it says that it runs well on the whole, I will play the game. If it says it doesn't, I won't bother. If it says it will run well but with glitches and suggests a workaround, I will try the workaround... so needless to say I find the compatibility list very useful and important.
However, long story short I have found the information given for both E and US versions of Suikoden 2 to be quite understated, I'm not sure but I believe the reports may have been just from one person who hasn't properly tested the game? Anyway here's the information for the US version as per compatibility list:
v1.10-1.11: After you fight Luca and Solon Jhee then leave the fort, the game goes gray and distorted, sometimes crashes; v1.5-1.11: Use -r option to avoid intro FMV and 1st boss battle problems.
Okay, I got past that fight and didn't notice that greying and distortion. But maybe that's just me. However, the next part where it says about -r option being in the intro FMV and 1st boss battle I found to be a massive understatement. In my experience, and I've played the game about 20 hours in now, the game will crash on every single FMV unless the -r option is checked. And as there at least a dozen FMV cutscenes in this game, it's a pretty annoying problem and affects gameplay a lot more than the compatibility list currently suggests. If other people can confirm this problem, maybe the list could be updated I wonder?
Here's what the compatibility list suggests for PAL version:
Music in intro is a little choppy; -r command line option does not solve the problem
I'm pretty sure that report is based on someone who hasn't played past the first boss, and indeed past the FMVs scattered through the game as I found the PAL version of this game has exactly the same problems as the US version! It crashes at every FMV. Not immediately at every FMV, but at the same point each time. For example, at the FMV roughly 3 hours into the game where the hero is escaping from the burning village, it's as the hero glances back on a burning house that the game will crash every time. This is the same for all FMV cutscenes I have found, in both PAL and US versions.
My Spec for reference is Windows XP, Pentium D CPU, SCPH1001 BIOS.
Anyway, I thought I'd submit this report and hope that maybe if other people are sharing the problems that I'm having that we could perhaps update the compatibility list in the eventual hope that these problems can be worked on and this great emu can be improved to play perfectly yet another PSX RPG classic!
Thanks for reading this long rant
