My PAL copy of FF8 now works, although the image had to be patched Are you trying from an original CD? If not, does the image have a .sub file? If its just a .bin file it won't work - I have tested Japanese FF8 which also has libcrypt protection and it appears to work.

I'm using an image which I ripped from my original CD (game ID SLES-02080/-12080/-22080/-32080), pSX Author. I ripped it with CloneCD, using one of the LibCrypt options. It plays fine in ePSXe, even unpatched. However, it's never played with pSX at all up 'till now; but in 1.7 the patched version will play (unpatched won't). I'm using the SCPH1001.bin BIOS.
I've only got into the game far enough to make a save so far, but will get back to it soon.
Yes, since I ripped it with CloneCD, it's an .img file with .sub, .ccd and .cue files. HTH.

Hmm - strange - the Japanese version works - I'll have to try to get hold of a PAL disc 1 to test...
What happens when you run it unpatched? How far does it get? If you enable status icons you'll see it flash 'cd' for a bit (lower case) - thats where it is doing the libcrypt check.

I've got the PAL version, SLES-02080 (the original CD's and all) and once it gets past the initial PS symbol with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe beneath it it'll go to a black screen. CD flashes in the corner for a few seconds, then MR, then it quickly alternates between CD and PR for a couple of seconds. And then it stops, and nothing happens.
Also, I should note that the PAL version of FF9 (SLES-02965) also has this problem. It goes to the initial screen with the PS logo and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, then the screen goes black. But instead of quickly alternating between CD and PR for a second or two it does it over and over... and over. Without result, or any errors popping up in the other window.
And on a general note, the only other game I've encountered with some possible form of copy protection still is Dino Crisis (SLES-02207). That comes up with a whole lot of 'raw read error, Incorrect function' messages when loading between the PS logo screen and the one warning of explicit violence and gore. And then it does nothing, no more error messages and no status icons flashing in the corner.
Hope that all helps.

Same for me; I haven't tried enabling the status icons, but the game (unpatched) simply doesn't start, pSX Author; I just get left with a black screen. Waren AlKar, pSX 1.7 will play the game if you patch it; you can get a patch from MegaGames ( www.megagames.com/). The PSXC patch is the one that worked for me. Edit: With status icons enabled, on the unpatched image, the CD icon flashes, then the MR one, the PR one momentarily, then the CD flashes a bit before all goes dark... With the patched version that works now, the CD icon flashes, then the RQ one comes on steadily, then the PR and RQ ones flash briefly, the MR one comes on, then the CD flashes again as the game starts.

From this it sounds like your PC is unable to use IoControl SPTI mode which is required for subcode reading. Can you tell me what pSX prints on the console - it should say something like this: IoControl: Using SPTI (Full subcode) CDROM: Using IoControl If it says its using raw read then you are out of luck.... you might try using ASPI though - there is a small chance that may work. One other thing to try is to install Nero BurnRights (you can download it free from their site) - and set it to allow all users to use the CD - under XP it can be that non-admin users are not allowed direct access to the CD drive.

Yeah, it says raw read. I'm assuming this sort of functionality (subcode reading) is dependant on what sort of CD and/or DVD drive one has. Mine is an old CD/DVD drive, Pioneer 16x 116 model.
When I try and use ASPI no CD's work, it comes up with 'using READCD (Formatted sub-q)', then a whole lot of errors involving 'failed, 224 hastat: 0 targstat: 0' then a line underneath with 'sense=00 00 00...' and so on.
I'm pretty sure I'm on the latest firmware from Pioneer, but I'll try that. Also on an account with administrator rights, but I'll try Nero BurnRights too just to be sure.

So what OS are you using, Waren AlKar? AFAIK only W2K and XP can use IOCTL.
And, as far as ASPI is concerned, it makes a great deal of difference which version you use. Windows 9x OSs incorporate a native ASPI that is useless. Adaptec, who I believe developed ASPI, distribute versions, but these seem to have reduced functionality. The best answer for ASPI is to google for ForceASPI, which installs a fully functional version of it.

I probably should have mentioned that. It's Windows XP, and I did have that ASPI functionality from Adaptec installed when pSX required a particular .dll file to run, even when using IOCTL. Not sure about now.
Also, Nero BurnRights didn't make any difference (not that I was expecting it to), and my DVD drive has the latest firmware. I guess it's fortunate I've been planning on getting a DVD burner anyway.

Folks, please remember to also post your testing of games in the compatibility section if you haven't done so already. In fact, I'd really recommend one thread for copyright protected games and their functionality in v1.7, that way we all know what new games can be played and stuff. I'm having a fun time keeping up as it is, but I'm sure I'll be especially busy tomorrow in updating the list.

For everyone having problems with FF* pal or other pal games, you MUST use a PAL bios, it doesnt work because of the ntsc-us bios you guys are using.
