my system:
- CPU: Pentium III 933Mhz - GPU: Geforce 4 MX 440 w/ 64mb RAM - RAM: 512mb PC133 - OS: Windows XP sp2
pSX runs incredibly sluggishly no matter what settings i use. the only games that run nearly full speed are final fantasy tactics and castlevania sotn. sotn actually works perfectly, getting around 10fps more than the max. fft runs at about 95-98% good, so there is the occasional stuttering.
but games such as the final fantasy series or chrono cross stutter and jerk like no-ones business. without frame skipping they run at 50% speed.
so 3d stuff is really bogged down, but 2d (and non graphically intenseive 3d) are pretty good with this system.
i can get 100% speed using epsxe however, with software and hardware rendering.

This is weird. pSX should work good on your machine...

in earlier versions, like say around 1.5, i couldn't get anything to run. it was too jerky no matter what i tried. i was getting about 5-7fps even just starting up and going in the bios. but when i tried 1.7, games became playable and 2d / non-intensive stuff worked pretty well.
i don't know what happened between 1.5 and 1.7 that would've affected my system so much - nothing hardware-wise has changed - but it was a huge performance jump for me anyways.
right now i use epsxe as it emulates at 100% speed but i would like to use pSX as it's very hard to get the original look and feel of the psx without it.

Hm, a new thread should probably be created instead of filling this thread up with offtopic conversation. Anyway, when you do create that new thread, can you tell us if you tried all the suggestions here? Thanks.

azathoth: does switching to full-screen help? (Alt+Enter).

i'm afraid it doesn't no. i've tried a varying amount of resolutions but none of them seem to make any difference. i think what i shall do is take uncle ultima's advice and make a proper thread to try and fix this. i initially posted here to say that my system was an example of a pc on the lower fringes of functionality for pSX, but if there's a way to solve this, rock and roll! i'll go and whip up a full post now. thanks in advance guys

it runs perfectly on this... Sony Vaio SZ2VP Centrino Duo 2.16GHz NVidia Geforce 7400 256MB 2GB Ram Sound: Sound Blaster Z2 OS : Win XP Pro SP2 I Tried running games from image and from cd and everything runs perfectly. Only game I've had a problem with so far is Vib Ribbon (which I understand is impossible to emulate). There is one small problem... I can't seem to get memory cards to work. Save states are fine and all.. but I like saving to memory cards if possible... Also , is there a way of loading from save files .. such as the ones you download from gamefaqs? Some of my games I've completed already and don't want to head back to the start all over again... do i need some kind of files in my memory card directory??

You need to create memory cards on the Memory cards tab in Configuration, beebot, and then format them by opening them in BIOS (remember you'll have to enable your gamepad as digital - by selecting it as a Normal pad in the Controller tab in Configuration - to do this).
When you say "load from save files," do you mean loading from a memory card or loading a save state? Save state - at a guess, these will differ from emu to emu, so you'd have to get pSX ones. Memory cards - yes, pSX will recognise several different formats. Just put the memory card file in your memcards folder in your pSX emu folder (or whatever folder you have pSX emu configured to use) and select it in Configuration; then you'll be able to access it, as long as the format is one the emu recognises.

beebot: The save files from GameFAQs are memory card images. More specifically, they are usually DexDrive memory card images. So... you'll have to get a utility (like MemTools) to convert it from DexDrive format to the format pSX supports (it could be called "raw", "Bleem!" or just *.mcd, which is the extension of the format used by pSX... depending on the converter). Once you've converted it to that format, follow patrickp's directions to set it. patrickp: I'm rather curious what these "several different formats" are that pSX supports. From what I can tell, it only supports memory cards with a .mcd extension, that supposedly being the raw format used by a couple other emulators.

The original format was .bin, hoshikuzu, and it also recognises ePSXe's .mcr format. Don't know what else, offhand.

.mcd as well (used by psxeven) anyway: win xp pentium4 2533mhz 256mb ddr sdram 133mhz ati radeon 9000 series (64mb) sis 7012 audeo device monitor: medion md1998pb [19" crt] (1024*768,100Hz, 32bpp) gamepad: Saitek Cyborg Force Rumble Pad I had problems with psx 1.0 (without frame-skipping it was very slow and the sound was bad) and 1.1 (only sound-issues) i think, but the other versions are okay. I can play all games at full speed without sound-problems or something like this, if the game is 100% compatible. However some games make problems (run too quick) if i don´t change the frequency of the monitor (to 90Hz or less) , disable vsync or (if i want to play in fullscreen) set manually the fullscreen frequency to 75hz pal or 60hz ntsc All in all it works great and has no really slowdowns unlike epsxe Furthermore I like the graphics of psx-emu more than the graphics of other emus. So, thanks for this great emu p.s.: This is the only emu that supports totally my gamepad All others don´t recognize my pad as an analog-pad with rumble-feature so it´s really an awesome emu.

Yes, hoshikuzu had already mentioned .mcd, kiru - that's why I didn't.

patrickp: Well, it seems I have learned something new. Thank you. My only question, then, is... is there anything that originally uses these two other formats?
