Does it work if you unplug your joystick/game pad? Does it print anything on the console?

Yeah it does, but the problem is that I'm playing Ape Escape and I need the controller to play it =/

Well, you need to provide more info. Which controller are you using? Does it print anything on the console?

I'm using a rockfire psx/usb, every other game I've tried works fine when I don't have the controller in, but it crashes when I do

AKA: the annoying Black Box with random text sometimes.
pSX needs the Text that appears in that box.

This is an error that pSX isn't detecting ("psx has encountered a problem and needs to close" is a windows message, meaning pSX doesn't even have time to see the error and handle it appropriately).
The most common times that I see messages like that are errors that can't be reproduced, an unforeseen error (having no error-checking code to handle it), and a virus. Have you run a full virus check using the latest definitions, and have you tried re-downloading the emulator? Also, have you tried using an older version of the emulator?

Well, every other emulator I've tried works with it, and when the emulator doesn't crash, it detects it, but when I close the configuration, it crashs. I've run a virus scan and nothing's popped up. I shall reinstall

thkoby: You've been asked four times if anything was printed in the console. Why have you chosen to ignore the question every time?

Sorry, I just closed it when the error message came up, it still runs in the background, and the same thing when it runs normally without the error message, I get:
(on the console)
Iocontrol: Using raw read CD ROM: using Iocontrol
then
1: 00000000-0002c580 repeatably
