win xp pro 1.6ghz processor 2gb ram 128mb ATI mobility radeon x300 epsxe v 1.6.0 scph1001 - USA bios Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.8 epsxe SPU core 1.5.2 epsxe CDR WNT/W2K core 1.5.2
any help would be greatly appreciated. o yeah, and my controller isn't working. i configured it in the config wizard so this is confusing as well.
thanks!! ;D

i've got everything to work now. the game still seems a bit laggy, i don't know if it really is laggy and low fps or if it's just because i haven't played a playstation game in years the sound is terrible. it's very basic, crappy sound. i remember the sound and ambiance being much better. is there a way to fix this?

Duh! I just noticed you're using ePSXe! No wonder the game is laggy. Try using the emulator this forum supports: pSX Emulator. It's far superior to ePSXe; in terms of resource usage (in other words, it'll run fine on your machine where ePSXe will lag), in terms of how well it plays the game anyway, and in ease of use .
Have you checked whether the game supports an analog controller, josh48315? It'll say on the back of the case: if it doesn't say, it doesn't support an analog controller.
You've probably configured your controller as Type SCPH-1200: Dualshock - which is perfectly correct for an analog controller. However, you need to set the Type to SCPH-1010: Normal pad for digital only games.
This is the way the Playstation itself works: although there you can toggle digital/analog status with a button on the controller (note: this does not work for a Playstation controller used with an emulator), while in pSX you have to change the Type on the Controllers tab in Configuration. This is one of the very few areas where ePSXe does better than pSX; in the Windows version, anyway. In the Windows version of ePSXe (not in Linux) you can toggle the controller between digital and analog modes with the F5 key - much more convenient!
However, there's an easy way round this: if you use Ultima's pSX Frontend, you can set up a profile for each game with pSX configured exactly as you want; so by starting pSX with the Frontend, you can start each game with the controller set appropriately.
BTW there's no need to make double posts: you can edit your previous one. Since you've actually edited both of those posts, it's obvious you know how!

fps should be better than ePSXe, josh48315. Are you running in a window or full screen?
Have you made any configuration changes from default on the Graphics and Sound tabs?
What controller are you using?

i'm running it full screen. i haven't made any changes to the config, except disabling bilinear interpolation because i thought this would make it run faster. i don't know exactly what my fps is because there is no fps meter, but i can tell it isn't as good as it should be. sometimes in certain areas and fight scenes where there is a lot of graphics or a lot of stuff going on, i notice significant loss of fps and a lag time from when i press the controller and when it actually responds in the game. the worst part is the sound in the codec and movie scenes. it skips every 10 seconds, then will work normal for a few seconds, then will start skipping again; this is a never ending cycle, and as i said this is what happens in the codec chatting and the cut scenes. the gameplay sound works fine. is there a way to give more ram/cpu to the game so it runs better?

I believe you can set the priority of the application in XP, josh48315, but I'm not sure how.
Press the tab key while you're playing for an info display, including fps.
However, while your system may not be the fastest, it's more than enough to run games on pSX. While there are some issues with the game (look in the Compatibility Lists; linked from the Things to Remember when Posting Reports post linked at the top of the page), there aren't any reports of it lagging like yours is. Do you have a lot of stuff running in the background - virus checker, messenger, anything like that, and do you run virus and malware checks regularly on your system?
How are you playing the game - from the original CD or from an image and, if an image, what format? Do other games play Ok in the emulator?

yeah i've set it as high priority in xp, just do it from the taskmanager and find the process. and no i'm not running a bunch of stuff in the background, and i do a full virus/spam/malware scan daily...i'm not stupid, but of course you still have to check i'm running it from a cd image, an iso. its a .rar and it had an error when i tried to extract it, but through psx i am able to go to file, insert cd image, and select the .rar and it works fine. i just realized i could just hit tab and see my fps, it is around 50. so i don't know why it felt low the other time, it could've just been because there were a lot of graphics and textures in the frame, or my system was just lagging because of who knows. anyway, all seems to be working somewhat well, except i am at the part where you fight psycho mantis, and you are supposed to plug the controller into port 2 on playstation so that psycho mantis can't read your moves. i went to config and switched to port 2, but he can still read my moves. i checked back and it somehow switched back to port 1. each time i switch to port 2, i click ok, then if i go right back to config without doing anything it's back to port 1. weird. oh yeah, the black screen that is supposed to say HIDEO never shows up for me...

I wasn't aware that pSX could read images from a .rar file, but from your descriptionit's obvious you're playing from an illegally downloaded game. You should have read the clearly displayed at the top of every page in the forum.
We don't support downloaded games because they're illegal, but even if that were not so, we still wouldn't support them because most problems with downloaded games are due to the fact that they're bad rips. It takes a little care to rip a non-standard format CD like a Playstation game, and you really think the bozos who post Playstation games illegally give a monkey's?
If pSX is reading the game from a compressed .rar file, the decompression may well account for the slowdowns in the game. Buy the game (ebay or Amazon) and rip it properly if you want to play from an image. Should be the end of your problems.
Read the forum documentation before posting again, and don't ask for help with illegal games again, or you'll be looking at a ban.
