Good day. I was looking for an easy-to-install PSOne emulator, and saw pSX mentioned in the AtariAge forums as one that is particularly easy to configure and use.
I had never heard of pSX before, but I tried downloading v 1.13 and installing it. The process went smoothly and it seems to work well. I borrowed some PS1 games from a friend and tried them out to see how well they run...
I tried running four games: Wipeout XL, Ape Escape, Armored Core, and 007 Racing. Of these, I've only played Wipeout XL much, but I played that quite a lot on a real PSOne that I used to own several years ago.
All four games seemed to look and sound exactly as if played on a real PSOne. I found that the controls for Ape Escape were overly sensitive, but this game requires a dual-shock controller and so I think the problems lie with my gamepad. I also found that Armored Core locked up when I tried to do a memory card save to slot 1 - but slot 2 works fine, as well as a game state save.
I should mention I'm using a Toshiba L300D laptop. It comes with Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1), an AMD Athlon X2 running at 1.9 GHz, and an ATI Radeon chip of some kind.
I think if you have some old PSX games you'd like to play but don't have a working PSOne, then this emulator does the trick quite nicely. Thank you to the developer: last night and this morning I played Wipeout XL for a couple of hours, something I haven't done in a long time!
