OK so i have been playing Final Fantasy 8 for about a week now on the emulator. When i play, it plays completely normal. However, when i load a previously saved game and try to open up the in game menu or walk to a new area, the game freezes or goes black. On the exe. separate screen, the message: "Read without driver" plays over and over.
Why could i play ff8 for so long and this suddenly happens? thanks for any help and sorry if the answer was obvious.... o well

How are you saving/loading? Memory card, or save states?

Then therein lies your problem. Save states are known to be problematic because they simply save the state of the memory at the particular save point, which may contain corrupted data (either because the game is poorly coded, the emulator isn't emulating accurately enough, or a combination of the two).
Things may look okay for a while, but as you continue playing exclusively with save states, the corruptions may accumulate to the point where further progress can no longer be made in the game. Memory card saves don't suffer from this issue because they save only the essential parts of the memory that the game needs to reconstruct the current game state the next time the system is booted up. That means any memory corruption will usually be flushed out the next time the memory card save is loaded.
If you have an earlier save state that doesn't have this problem, load it and save to a memory card, then restart the game and load from the memory card again.

psxemulator.proboards54.com/index.cgi?board=rules&action=display&thread=1057#1153770101Create a memory card, and save using the save points found all over the Final Fantasy VIII world (those yellow/blue spinning circle/sphere things). Although they work for the most part, you should try to avoid using save states between separate gaming sessions (meaning you should try not to use save states to store your progress between emulator exit/restart). During a gaming session, it's generally okay to use save states, but even still, you shouldn't rely too much on them, and should prefer in-game save points wherever possible. Neither case is any different from one another (technically), but using save states between emulator exit/restart lulls you into relying on them too heavily for extended periods of time (which is not what you want).
