Game Title: Star Ocean: The 2nd Story Game ID(s): SCUS 944.21 pSX Version(s): 1.13
There are a number of cutscenes that do not display at all. When a town is hit by a tsunami in one cutscene, the screen goes black and the music continues. After a moment the game resumes as normal.
At the Hoffman Ruins, however, when you attempt to open the front door, the game freezes and after a few seconds, the psxfin.exe goes crazy repeating text very rapidly. The text reads:
translate_address: illegal physical address 04403b00 r3000: executed illegal opcode 0000faec r3000: executed illegal opcode f875f1e4 r3000: executed illegal opcode 070afa3e r3000: executed illegal opcode fffff2d6 [repeat*∞]
I have tested this using pSX 1.6 (the version the compatibility list OK'd) and have gotten the same results.
Windows XP SP2 Intel Core 2 Duo 6420 @ 2.13GHz 1 GB RAM GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb with the latest driver 6.14.11.6921 Direct X 9.0c
BIOS SCPH 1001 The game format is a '.img' The emulator settings are default
I think that's everything. :]

Could you upload a memory card file saved before some of these points so I can test it? Also, do you have the .ccd and .sub files that should go with that .img file? Playing from the original disc may also help. Making sure the disc isn't too scratched up before ripping is also something to check.

Ah, I didn't read the readme file correctly. It says that it supports .ccd/.img/.sub, yet I only have the '.img'. I expect that's what's causing the trouble. That'll teach me to hastily download things off the internet. I live in Thailand of course, so there's no easy way of getting a retail NTSC-US anyway...or a retail anything, really. :s
If you'd still like to confirm my suspiscions--I've read the rules, I know piracy is not supported here--here is a memory card with the game saved just before entering the ruins.

Alright, I'm gonna test that really quick. Hopefully somebody doesn't come along and lock this thread before I get a chance to finish testing, since it'll be good to test either way, just in case.
Edit: Yup, it's your image. Even just playing from my ripped ccd/img/sub image, the door opened just fine (tested from the original disc too just in case, that worked too).
Don't know how possible it would be for you, but eBay always has some good, cheap copies of Star Ocean sitting around.

There are a few $20 copies on eBay, but then the shipping cost is typically another $20 on top. I do own a real PSX though (the 1001 model!), as well as a real PS2.
Thanks for your help, I'll find another image.

You should have read the prominently featured at the top of every page in the forum.
We don't support downloaded games because they're illegal, merlin. However, even if they were legal we still wouldn't support them, because downloaded images are so often faulty. Ripping non-standard format CDs like Playstation games requires a little care and, basically, most people posting games for download couldn't give a monkey's.
If you're in the US and buying from US dealers, $20 seems a bit expensive for shipping, although TBH $40 is good value for a quality game - particularly one you want. Try Amazon instead; they act as a marketplace for a lot of games dealers, and they regulate the shipping prices - AIR I wouldn't pay that to an Amazon dealer even to ship from the US to the UK.
Don't ask for support for illegal material on this forum again, or you'll be facing a ban - and you'd better read the forum documentation: all linked at the top of every page as well.
