If there was one thing to be slightly missing in pSX, it would be the lack of a "hard" pause option. pSX does pause when it's not an active window, but there isn't another way to pause it while it's active.
I know the real PSX console never had a real pause button of course, but after looking for cheats (actually the hit counter in Galaga on Tekken 1!) I found it annoying that pSX started up straight after alt-tabbing back to it, and missed half of the invaders in the formation!
As you would know, the normal pause functionality on the PSX was limited to the game, whether the designers wanted you to pause it or not (since Start is also used to skip things like intro movies (MDEC), or just disabled like Survival/TA mode in Tekken 2). This type of pause is also not a full CPU pause, normally just a video pause of which you can access a "pause menu" of some sort.

Perhaps you can just open the configuration dialog before switching to another application, and when you come back, just close the configuration dialog to "unpause" the emulator.
