Sorry to do a topic revival but I'm having the same problem, with Tales of Destiny II (only game I've tried with pSX so far), US Iso with scph1001.bin (pSX 1.8). The screen will freeze after a battle (doesn't happen very often), if I reinsert the ISO, it'll continue to work. I'll try mounting the ISO and see if this bug still happens, I'll edit my post in a few hours.
Edit: same problem with the mounted ISO.

Not sure how the admins will take the topic revival, but I'll just run with it for now. I can't exactly recall this problem occurring (and it's listed in the compatibility list as having no problems), but I'll dust off the game and test it out. I'll come back with an edit once I have an answer for you.
In the meantime, just wondering really quick if you've tried this game in ePSXe or some other emulator, and if this problem occurs in one of those too.
Edit: After fighting numerous battles, I didn't get one hang at all. By numerous I mean 50 battles. Would that be enough to encounter the problem? My thought on the topic is that it's some little thing that pSX Author could *probably* fix (although I obviously can't speak for him), but it sounds like something that usually ends up being a minor bug fix with the emulator. There have been other games that have had this problem, and either they get fixed, said to be unfixable problems, or occassionally it's just a bad image. Half the games in this thread have protection problems if I recall, but Tales of Destiny II obviously isn't one of them.

Thanks for your reply. This problem doesn't occur with ePSXe. 50 battles should be enough to "trigger" this bug, but I doubt it's only related to this game. I'll get my hands on a few original non-ISO games (can only get PAL ones though, since I'm Euro) as well as other ISO (NTSC and PAL) and see if this bug occurs anywhere else. Anyways it's just a minor bug since it doesn't occur very often, having to reinsert the image is a bit annoying but not a big deal, this emulator is well worth the trouble.

Well, I'm not exactly saying that it's only related to this game, but I think that it is something something specific about the game that the emulator isn't quite properly handling (and very possibly there are a couple more games that have this same bug, but you'll most likely be able to count on your hands the games you can find with the same problem that haven't already been fixed). We can only hope that it is indeed a small emulation bug, and that it'll be fixed either through this specific game, or one of the others that may have the same problem. I'm now pretty certain this is an emulation bug (as it would be near-impossible to change a setting to cause this kind of problem anyway), but I guess it's up to pSX Author to say what this is, eh? Only suggestion I can think of is test the original game if you have it, and along those same lines, try re-extracting the image to ccd/img/sub using CloneCD or Alcohol 120% and see if the problem still occurs. One good aspect of this problem is that it has me playing the game again now. I forgot how awesome this game is.

Hehe, yeah it's a pretty awesome game. Unfortunately, I don't have the original CDs since it's almost impossible to find here in Europe (there is no PAL version). I think, as you said, that the ISO is simply corrupted/badly made, since it does the same bug with Tales of Destiny 1, both ISOs made by the same person. On the other hand, I tried a few original games CDs (PAL) such as FF7 and Breath of Fire 3 and I didn't encounter any problem with pSX 1.8.
