Some games don't support dualshock - thats probably what is happening... switching between normal and dualshock mode in the settings is the same as pressing the analog button on a real dualshock.
Nothing has changed between 1.6 and 1.9 - you are probably testing different games.

When playing games that don't need analog controls:
1. If pSX is running, close it. 2. Switch your gamepad to digital mode. 3. Start the emulator. 4. Go to the controllers configuration menu in pSX and select 'Normal Pad'. 5. Map your controls accordingly.

If a game refuses to boot, try using the 'normal pad' setting.

I've never had any problems with changing the controller type on the fly (except with Valkyrie Profile, which happens in a consist, predictable manner and seems to be game-specific). Also, I never have to remap my buttons. Many converters can read the direction pad arrows as either buttons or directions (the dance-pad mode setting is what this option is called). I'd recommend always using the option to have them read as directions if possible, and always start the emulator with "normal pad" setting (if you don't use shortcuts for specific games), and change it only if you know the game supports analog and you actually *want* to use analog.
