Is "neither" an option in this question? Seriously though, on PSX bt far. Any PSX->PC conversion has been pretty bad in my books. Only good thing about PC FF7 that I can think of is the midi music, that was easily rippable and then I could play them on my awesome soundfonts and whatnot. Final Fantasy VII's midi are design for and sound much better on the Yamaha's XG Softsythetiser

Compared to the General instrument set, I think is what he's getting at. But to be honest, they are both good for different reasons. Neither one is really better than the other. And any soundfont you could use to play the midi files, you could use for the game. So what's the point of ripping them and playing them with better soundfonts, when you could enjoy using those same soundfonts while playing the game. And actually, Yamaha specifically redesigned their commercial internal synthesizer for Final Fantasy VII. Too bad they didn't do a very good job of it.

I say... if you really want to enjoy the music in it's original greatness, download a .psf archive of the songs (check www.zophar.net for game music in it's original format, although there are some other very good sites for game music), and get the "Highly Experimental" plugin for Winamp (found on the same site) for playing .psf and .minipsf music files. Music ripped straight from the game in its original format is by far the best and most accurate sounding music you can get for games, especially since most of the plugins to play them have been developed far enough that they work nearly as perfectly as the original system (haven't had any problems yet). I have hundreds of games-worth of music in .spc, .gym, .gsf, .psf, and any other system formats out there that have games I like the music to. And if you really want to, you can use Winamp or any other program that supports Winamp plugins (like NeoAudio) to output the songs to .mp3, .wav, or whatever other format you wanna use. It really is the best way to go for the music. pSX is great to use, but for games like Final Fantasy VII, the sound still isn't perfectly emulated, so the sound glitches may irritate some people.

Because the game isn't really that great? ;D If I want to listen to the musics (which I actually don't so much), I pop in the soundtrack that I happen to have.

Then there *really* isn't any point to grabbing the .midi files off the game and playing them with a better soundfont, cuz you have the soundtrack! Besides, the .psf song files are more accurate-sounding than the soundtrack (which is remastered to play optimally in a CD player).

The question is, which do you prefer, psf accuracy, or something else? The point of grabbing the midis is to play them with far better sounds than those of Yamaha or psx soundbanks. It was fun to experiment with all kinds of sounds, and create "enhanced" versions of the musics. ;D Also, since psf was brought up, I'll just mention that I have tagged&timed couple psf packs in my time as well because I'm generally a good guy.

There's a music patch around which replaces midi files with the psf ones.

You mean for the PC game? How would the PC handle the files without an emulated sound core? Would the patch somehow make the game use one? I'd imagine it'd be pretty difficult to implant one in the game and make it use it, unless you create a patch that causes the game to call upon it everytime it wants to play a music file, but then it'd also have to be changed to pass which song it wants played to the sound core. Sounds like a lot of tedious work to me. Although if there is some kind of patch that allows the game to play the psf files, I'd be more than happy to try it out.

It's not really a patch, more of an application that overides the midi cues with audio files. The here's a link to the latest version of the application. FF7Music Pretty simple name huh.

What, the character models? I mentioned that you could hack the character models before Or are you talking about the translation?

Yeah, there's also an american version. Can't try it with my Windows XP pc. The XP patch isn't compatable with the american model patch. EDIT: Here's a link to a listing of patches.
