This might be obvious to you, but for all eventualities sake I will just add that you must leave the Drivespeed program running in the system tray at all times for the speed limiting to be effective.
If you close it, your drive will go back to whatever speed it was at before.

Oh, thanks for that, haha. I do close it after I set the read speed. No wonder I don't seem to feel any difference. And the cd is superhot after playing only for a while.

Well, if the CD is "superhot" after playing, it's not surprising you've had one disintegrate, jackofisabela. In the machine I use mostly, I have two optical drives mounted with a slot in between. In the spare slot I have two 80mm fans, (low speed NMB ones - quite silent), one blowing up and one blowing down. That helps to keep the drives nice and cool. My CDs get warm sometimes, but never hot.

Yeah, I should've remembered to mention keeping the program running, as I came across that myself (as something I didn't do at first). Sorry about that. patrickp: I'm not doing too bad at this point. Just working hard, trying to keep things even. Internet is still battery-powered. I'm working on fixing that problem, but it's hard when my roommate is still jobless and horrible with money. Hopefully within the next week or two, I'll have high speed internet again, and then you'll soon be seeing me nearly every day again...

Well, it'll be good to see you back, GM. Incidentally, one more reason for checking out Linux...

About keeping the program open for it to take effect, if you regularly hit the 'close' button or try to close it with the X on the upper right corner, it will just minimize itself in the tray. You have to right click the tray icon and choose to exit to actually close it. That is to say that you probably didn't accidentally close it atleast.

That's drives, not drivers. I don't think my optical drives would necessarily get that hot anyway, but I like to run a reasonably cool system. And it means I'm pretty unlikely to suffer exploding CDs...

24x - 32x are good speed read, why increase them???

Because transferring files at 52x is faster?
