Hello, This is my first post and I'm sad its one in which i'm asking for help instead of giving it -- I just discovered this emulator today. I had trouble with the DirectX files and following advice in other threads I installed all needed files. After that error subsided I received another two: "Failed to find a valid mode (Perhaps you need to switch your desktop to 32-bit mode" and "Failed to Initialize D3D device".
I changed the settings on display to 32-bit mode and it has done nothing.
Please advise, and thanks for reading.

What videocard do you have, and what sort of system, innervisions?

Geforce 8600 GT, but I'm running windows Xp Home edition via parallels on my mac -- I'm pretty sure that won't matter much except for memory allocation. I'm allocating 1.5gigs of memory to the windows OS. Edit: 128MB VRAM

Hi, I'm not sure that OS emulation (i.e. parallels or vmware) enable you to play games or emulator that needs directx. It can be the problem.

Well, has anyone seen these errors before or is this a first? If it is a first does anyone know of any applications other than PSX that access directx so I can test it out and see?

Most Windows games made in recent years will use some version of DirectX, innervisions. As to DirectX 9.0c, I couldn't say - I'm no longer a Windows user any more than I have to be...
But I think bevito is right - running operating systems in virtual space may not allow the direct access to hardware that is often needed. If you have an Intel based MAC, why not try running Windows on Bootcamp?

That'll be the last possible option as it means upgrading to Tiger and more money. Untill then I'll try a few games and see how that goes.

You can try dxdiag test, i think it will tell you that hardware acceleration is not available, or something like that. For the moment, only hypervisor virtualisation enable a guest OS to use the full capabilities of a graphic card. I think in the future there will be improvement
