Hi
I'm trying to make my copy of FF8 Japan work on PSX without success. I always end up with the 'anti piracy' screen, even when try changing bios. I remember, back in the days, I had to upgrade my modchip to a stealth modchip to make it run.
I don't want to patch my games, so is it possible to make the PSX emulate a stealth modchip ?
I've tried the same game with epsxe and it was working perfectly (original CD and image), but I'd hate going back to epsxe.
Is there a way to fix that on the emu side ?

The Japanese BIOS should work, remember to restart pSX for each change. Also check if the sub-code data is being read off the disc, pSX will log what kind of reading it will use on the drive when the disc is loaded. If it works via the drive and you wish to use a disc image, be sure to use a format that includes sub-code data. CloneCD format (CCD/IMG/SUB) and Alcohol's Media Descriptor Format (MDF/MDS) are capable formats.

Thanks for the answer. I already tried with variouss japanese Bios and it doesn't work Have you tried that yourself ? FF8-J is not using libcrypt, so it's not using sub-code (but FF8-E does). The protection used in FF8 is described here www.megagames.com/psx/psx_ff8_protection.shtml

I can't quite try it myself since I don't have a copy of the Japanese game. I will try to ask around, and maybe you can try the Cheat Disc method there as Cheat Discs do work on pSX.

Have you tried a PAL BIOS though? The NTSC-U games tested worked by using a PAL BIOS. Perhaps NTSC-J games are the same way? Or possibly a disc swap using a different region of FFVIII (if you have it)? Otherwise, as stated, there are a few cheat devices that work with pSX, though there's also a bunch that *don't* work... lol.
