I've tried loading FF9 from disc and from image, but the PS logo cuts away to black and nothing happens. Any ideas?

If its the PAL version then it doesn't work in pSX yet due to the protection it uses. The NTSC version works fine + there is probably also a crack.

Ahh, that would be the case then. Any idea where I could get a PAL > NTSC crack?

I applied a patch from there and get to the crack screen ok, but when I press circle (S) for NTSC, I just get a black screen again.

You need to make sure you have a good image to patch, joemc: if it's a copy protected game (which may be why you need the patch), you'll need to rip it with an application that can deal with copy protection, such as CloneCD or CDRWin.
When I tried to patch a copy-protected game I had ripped with Burnatonce (which does an excellent, and free, job on unprotected games), I kept getting a message that the file was the wrong size, even when I ripped from a mounted .img (CloneCD) image. However, when I used the patch on the CloneCD image itself, it worked, and I was able then to rip it successfully to the .bin/.cue format (that pSX Emu requires) with Burnatonce from the mounted image.
Oddly enough, I usually seem to be able to play unpatched .img files in ePSXe that I have to patch to play in pSX Emu.
I believe CDRWin will rip directly to the .bin/.cue format; the reason I use CloneCD is because it's what I have.

I used CDRWin to create the bin/cue form the disc and used ppf-o-matic to apply the patch. The crack screen appears in all it's glory, allowing me to turn on cheats and stuff. When I try to proceed by pressing the buttong for NTSC (alos tried PAL, just incase), I get nothing. Interestingly I tried playing this game in ePSXe too and it crashes at the exact same part of the intro movie everytime. Guess I should just give up on PAL and look out for a NTSC disc image...

The same happens to me with Vagrant Story PAL. I know it is copy protected but even patching doesn't help getting it to run.
