is there a way to convert psp saves (ps1 games played on a psp) so psx (emulator) can load them?

Well... this is something to look at, but that technique seems to only PSP to PC/PS1 if you have this set up *before* you create the saves. How about you take a look at that in case it seems like something you can do (and would want to do), and I'll continue searching for a more direct (and compatible) solution to your question... Edit: Oddly, it doesn't really seem like anybody has bothered to try this or even ask about it. I see a lot of similar topics, and a bunch of people asking about PS1 to PSP, but not the other way. I don't have my PSP anymore, so I can't check this, but... can you at least get the save files, in whatever format they're in, from the PSP to PC? If I recall correctly, there's a folder on the memory stick that holds this data, but I can't remember if the PS1 game saves (memory card files, basically), are separate files like they are for PS1 emulators. If there are any files whose names indicate they are PS1 saves, could you possibly copy them off the PSP and upload them someplace for me to take a look at? If you can't tell if any of them are saves for PS1 games, could you just zip *all* the files in that folder to an archive and just upload the archive?

i tried to look at the psp saves and its organized into folders with the gamecode (which i dont know which is which hehe). in those folders are .png files and other extensions that are different from one folder to another. anyway i hope there are other posters that have found a way to do it, playing thru 4disks of ff9 kinda sucks lol.

config.bin icon0.png param.sfo scevmc0.vmp scevmc1.vmp

I think it's those last two folders... but just to be on the safe side (and to possibly answer a question or two I may have about the files), please just compress all those files using Winzip or WinRAR (or 7zip, or whatever you may use to compress files), and upload the file someplace so I can download it. I may be able to play around with the files and effect a conversion. As I asked in my previous post.
I only wish you would've just uploaded the files right away as specified, so I could've got it done for you tonight. As it is... if you could just upload those files for me so I can look at them... I'll look at them tomorrow evening after I get off of work.

I can be of some assistance on this particular topic, I believe.
config.bin contains configuration information for the PS1 emulation. icon0.png contains the graphic icon for the save file. param.sfo contains actual data on the save-- which game it belongs to, the title, etc. scevmc0 and scevmc1 are the memory card files for the two slots respectively.
NOW we hit the problem point.
The memory card files are MCR-format with a header at the front. The header contains a checksum of the image. We don't know how the checksum is calculated. While it's possible to convert the scevmc files by pulling the header off and it'll work just fine with pSX/ePSXe...
..conversion BACK to load it into the PSP isn't going to work without knowing how the checksum works. There's a workaround using the PSP cheat plugin for custom firmware that lets you directly import a MCR back into the PS1 emulation during the disc boot process, but that's a few extra steps.
Basically, until the checksum is worked out, there's not a hell of a lot we can do.

well im not really concerned of being to use it again on a psp (i sold it for my 360 fund). i just want to continue the games ive already played using psx and a sweet wired 360 controller (which vibrates unlike the psp).
so do i just copy the .vmp to the memory card slots? and psx would be able to load em?

Glad to hear it works. I was thinking that the .vmp files could probably be converted... either with a program, or by some hex editing. I'm certainly glad that it was the first choice.

Shendo does some excellent stuff, and posts here, too.

Very true. And... I'd like to investigate the problem of converting from .mcr to .vmp. That leads to a request...
Anybody around here who has any PS1 saves on their PSP in this format, could you please upload your save folders for me to play around with? Or if you know a site that contains an archive of them, could you direct me to that? Unfortunately, without my PSP, I can't use the saves I used to have (unless my roommate still has his memstick, which I doubt). I'd really like to see if I could work out some way to convert *both* ways.

Only problem is... GameFAQs doesn't seem to have PSP saves of PS1 games. Saves for PSP games wouldn't be so useful to me, because I can't convert them to a known format for me to compare with. I basically want to figure out how the checksum is figured out for a PS1 game save, and the PSP saves won't really help me with that if the headers are different, not to mention it probably wouldn't be using the same areas of data within the save to generate the checksum, which is a primary focus of my research.

Nice *links in third-party utilities thread* Useful as is, but I think it'll become even more useful if/when Shendo comes up with a conversion from MCR to VMP, since it'll mean portable gaming on the road, full-screen/accurate gaming at home, no lost progress in between
