The downfall to that is there's no "quality checks" for those types of compatibility reports, since it won't be (immediately) open to discussion when someone posts some information. Aside from that, I can see a lot of duplicate reports happening. In short, having someone (or some people) moderate the listing (as the current "setup" is) is, IMHO, probably the best way of getting good/decent reports -- simply making some fields required might not always be enough (though that's one plus side to having a submission form).

I'm completely aware of that, and there will be moderation and checks on the submitted data.

Why not have a database that members can input to, but the results are not displayed until they've been checked - or only displayed in a section with warnings that it's unchecked? Granted, someone would still have to check it, but with the information all collected in one place, it would be much easier than trawling through the forums. You could also set it up so that people have to enter the required information. How about also setting up 'accounts' so people can register (and update) information on the box they're testing on, so a) you'd know and b) there'd be no need to duplicate it each time someone made a report? I don't know whether you'd want to limit posting information to people with accounts, or forum members only, or only allow accounts to forum members, but those are worth thinking about...

... I... sorta noticed... patrickp: Yah, that's sorta what I was trying to get at -- a moderation queue (not just moderation/editing of already-posted reports, though I'm not sure if that's what Truth already meant). It'd also be nice if there was some way to ban users, as I'm almost 100% sure spam will be posted on it.

Well, if certain sections of the required information had to be entered in a set format (say, game IDs) that should pretty much stop spamming.
What spammer is going to check through the forums to find out what game IDs are, let alone how to format them? Whereas anyone making a genuine contribution to the Compatibility Lists should be providing this information anyway.

I would love to merge the user login data to the database registration (there will be member logins only) but the forum host does not like to share or give data that boards accumulate.

You guys do realize that just about everything suggested adds up to what we have now: everybody submits data to a central location (this forum), the information is filtered and posted to a website (by me).

@smegforbrain: I think the difference would be that, instead of you having to trawl through threads and sort out muddled or missing information, it would be presented to you in a more coherent form and, if some of the information was required to make an entry, like BIOS(s), you wouldn't have to do so much chasing up.

Something I'm also worried about, though, is that there'd be no room for discussion about a specific compatibility report, so it makes thing a lot more difficult to verify/clarify a report unless someone brings the report to the forum (in which case it's nearly back to square one).
Something else nice about an automated system, though, is that if several moderators are assigned to sift through the reports, all the work won't be pinned to a single user, which can relieve some stress (and I don't know about smegforbrain, but I found it to be extremely tedious).
I don't know, I'm torn between both systems.

I'd see it as a means for people to make compatibility reports - obviously people who have problems with a game would still post them...

and I don't know about smegforbrain, but I found it to be extremely tedious). It's tedious to update the list itself, but it's not that bad in the end. I find going through threads to be a chore sometimes, whether it's because the forums here just don't allow you to see only new posts since your last visit, or because threads can bog down and get sidetracked from time to time.
