karma system would have a sense if its use/abuse would be granted/limited to wise people only. but unfortunately u know, the world is variegated... p.s. i express a wish: by the end of the year, id like to exhibit a nice -50 so lets keep on! ;D

Karma system makes sense if the requirements for giving karma would be higher. vBulletin forum software has couple different things that count, like how long the person has been a member, how many posts he has, and what is his current karma. Basically anyone new and totally random is not allowed to rampage on anyone's post. But who cares about some trivial number of karma anyway. It would be better if the whole karma system could be removed, that is, if proboards allows that. Because it's sending mixed signals all over the place as it is now. But I'm just ranting.

I agree. Is there any way we can ditch the Karma points system, administrators?

Or if it can't be ditched, a way to reset everybody's Karma everyday or something... that way, the system is rendered useless.

The karma system actually can be disabled. Let's see what the other administrators say about it though (I don't care either way).

Perhaps put it to a vote or something? At any rate, the majority opinion here seems to be to dump it. Edit: sorry, Don Meu/meude, we seem to be hijacking your thread a bit. But you _did_ bring the subject up!

I honestly award people that I think are either good constructive posters and/or good helpers to the community. I exalted Ultima and patrickp a few times just because evertime I check the forum, I see that they've helped someone. I rarely smite someone, only time that I do smite someone is if they repeatedly break the rules or if they start being mean to other members. I think it's a good system. I usually check someones karma when I seen a new member just so I can see how other members view them but I never use that to base my own opinion of them. In the case of Don Meu, I looked at all of the posts made by him and didn't see a reason to why he had -10 karma points so I resetted it. Of course the system could be abused by members who have nothing better to do than to wait every hour to just to smite someone that they just don't like just to make them look bad but most people don't do that (at least I hope not). I say keep it but it's really up to y'all. See what Truth and emulover wants first.

Well, in his case, it was all the friction he caused and angry words he used with his last FFO thread. Luckily, it seems he's mellowed out a bit, so hopefully that means there won't be any more fighting and bashing of people going on.
It's good that you make an honest use of the Karma (and I'm the same way in that I exalt people who deserve, and very rarely smite people who *really* deserve it), but there are a lot of people who *don't* honestly use the system, and that easily messes it up for the rest of us. It doesn't take that many people abusing the system to throw it off badly. I never really check a person's Karma, though... instead I just read their posts and the replies to their posts. It gives a much clearer idea of people and what others think about them.

I think karma-type systems tend to work one of two ways. First, you get situations where it doesn't get used very much, so it's pretty meaningless - that's what tends to happen here. And, because of this, when someone does get smitten a few times, it really shows, whereas if the system was generally more used, it would just be a few points off a much larger amount.
And second, you get forums where it is used a lot. This is useful in some ways, but tends to suffer from members organising themselves into cliques, so clique members get exalted at the drop of a post and non-clique members get left out in the cold.
I don't like either.
