FWIW I had no problem with a 1600 x 1200 desktop resolution with the default ati driver or with the fglrx driver, kinghanco. Maybe you'd better ask Sune...
BTW the ati driver is the default open source Ubuntu driver for ATI cards. fglrx is the proprietary ATI one. I don't know about Mint, but the ati driver is what Ubuntu will use for an ATI card by default; you have to install the fglrx driver yourself. Easiest way to do that is with the Restricted Drivers Manager; ATM it installs 8.34.8 instead of 8.38.6, probably because of problems with the later drivers, but it works fine. Try that - it should work in Mint unless they've dumped the Restricted Drivers Manager.
8.35.5 and 8.36.5 have been problematic because, it seems, ATI have not built them properly for the current XOrg driver. Guess I'll have to try 8.38.6 sometime to see if ATI have caught up yet, but I'm not that fussed.
AFAIK OpenSUSE is free (I tried it some time ago) but you have to pay for support, and AFAIK paying customers will get new versions earlier and full access to the repositories.

That's easy..I don't have any ATI cards (my Radeon 7000 PCI is collecting dust in Denmark (a national pastime)), nor do I have a monitor that can do 1600x1200 without exploding!

I wonder this is the problem. OpenGLOverlay is disabled.
Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AS [Radeon 9550]" Driver "fglrx" Option "VideoOverlay" "on" Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" EndSection
I will check to see what version of the driver that I install.
=====================================Edit #1
Ok I have version 8.37.6 install which Doom 3 and Quake 4 doesn't like.
=====================================Edit #2
Ok the "OpenGLOverlay" need to stay "off" because the screen will slowy blacking out. I change it back to "off"
I did install older version and nothing isn't change. I even try 8.38.6 which still nothing isn't change.
I guest I need one of those faster computer that they have today for Linux. Other wise games like these that have speed problem need to be play on XP instead of Linux. XP have better support.
=====================================Edit #3
Maybe you can tell me what Linux Mint doesn't have.

Enter fglrxinfo in a terminal, kinghanco - the output should be something like this:
If the OpenGL stuff is Mesa rather than ATI, the driver is not properly installed.
Also do glxinfo and see if the first few lines include
Again, if it says No, the driver is not properly installed.

All I did is enable my ATI graphics card and Ubuntu send me a small driver for it after I got done a clean install. Took care of that. I quit looking for a good ATI graphics card driver. The one that I had earlier that I got from Envy causes graphics go very slow after I fix it. Some of the screen savers chopping moving. It was awful. XP run even better with this. -> www.lifeglobe.com/product/Sharks/I just don't understand why the graphics are slower on Linux.

The trouble is, as I said before, that ATI doesn't seem to have built the most recent 2 or 3 drivers to work with current versions of XOrg. I presume that's why the driver in the repositories is still 8.34.8; usually it's just a version or so behind the current release. Anyway, if you install the most recent drivers, they won't work properly, so Ubuntu goes back to using the Mesa OGL implementation and keeps complaining about DRI not working. I've found the best way (again as I said earlier) is to install the driver with the Restricted Drivers Manager. This installs the 8.34.8 driver and makes all necessary changes in xorg.conf etc - all you have to do is reboot. There's a guy called Kanotix who's done a hack to fix the drivers; I haven't tried it because the 8.34.8 driver works well enough for me. However, I notice that, following this link from a mention in the release notes about the problem, there's a page with an update to the current driver(8.38.7 instead of 8.38.6) that, reading between the lines, may fix this problem. I might give it a whirl sometime and see if it breaks... I take NO RESPONSIBILITY if you try it and your videocard goes up in flames. Edit: bad news. At least the 8.38.7 ATI driver doesn't nuke your xorg.conf file like previous ones did, but it still can't find DRI and the Mesa driver is in One day...

I found this. www.linuxhardware.org/article.pl?sid=07/03/09/1321243They are telling the truth there. Known Issues:
* Attempting to install the ATI Catalystâ„¢ Linux software suite on distributions that have updated certain 3D components outside of the stock XOrg 6.8.2 may result in the driver not initializing 3D applications properly. * Enabling stereo may result in rectangular corruption in X Windows on the screen's right hand side. So how did they find out when they didn't notice this until just now? Heh. Wake up ATI people! Fix it or stop putting out new version that does the same thing.

Well I need not to worry then. Hopeful they get it more stable in a few years. Look like they just work on this for 7 months.

Do I need to add these?

If you have the fglrx driver running, yes, you want to add those lines to your xorg.conf file, kinghanco.
Also do
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv in a terminal.
Which fglrx driver are you running now?
