I'd have to cast my vote for Final Fantasy 6. Each character (13 in all, i believe), had their own lil quirks and tribulations...certainly wasn't expecting a game with that much emotional depth from an SNES cart. Terra coming to terms with her Esper half. Locke coming to terms with the loss of a loved one. Celes conflicted with loyalty to the empire or sympathy for those who were suffering. Sabin, the run away prince and his brother, Edgar, the king womanizer. Geez, the cast of characters were great...c'mon. I'd love to see 3-d remake...or a graphics update for this game. My runner up would be Final Fantasy 9. I guess i enjoy the FF in which the characters were likable and i could somehow relate to them. In FF 8...i thought Squall was just a flat out jerk. And really, I didn't understand why the others followed him, a brooding and moody lot he was.

I haven't play FF8 Yet ... so i have no opinions about it but my all time favorite Final Fantacy would be 7 - I play that one alot along with 9 , and X - I am trying to find a store that has a copy of 8 but haven't found one yet - I think all were very good though - except X2 (That one did suck I made the mistake of buying it)

Wow, what a surprise. The two psx final fantasies are winning in the psx emu forum Sorry boys, it's ff4 or 6. That's where the debate is at.

Unfortunately, this is a vote and opinion thread, and there is no wrong opinion, so there's no specific game that the argument should be at. Not everyone has played the older games, which could explain why they might not be winning like you want them to be.
In any case, I'll stick to not voting. I've liked all the Final Fantasy games I've played, and don't have much preference of one over the other (nothing wrong with that, right? ;P). Of course, I haven't played every one, and have been most exposed to the PlayStation ones, so I don't know if I'm making a fair judgement at all (maybe I might have liked the old games more if I played them -- who knows), but whatever.

I agree with Ultima, except that I've played FF1 - FF10-2, plus Mystic Quest, Tactics, Tactics Advance, all the US-release remakes and ports, Adventure (which shouldn't count), and Legends 1 - 3. So now that my credentials are out of the way...
I voted for Final Fantasy 5 (that's right... that one vote is mine). I'm at a 4-way tie for FF5, FF6, FF7, and Tactics... but I had to pick one, so I went with FF5 since it had no votes. FF5's job system was simply awesome, FF6 had awesome characters and vast item varieties (the Colluseum alone makes that aspect worth noting), FF7's materia system and in-depth storyline were wonderful, and Tactics is probably the funnest Strategy/RPG I've ever played (and I've played most of the ones people know, plus a bunch people *don't* know). Job system, storyline... great game.
Then again, pretty much *all* the Final Fantasy games were great, except Adventure (GB) which was just horrible, Mystic Quest (SNES) which wasn't bad but didn't measure up to its "Final Fantasy" name at all, Tactics Advance (GBA) which didn't allow you to see how your stats would change with different equipment in the shops (may seem petty, but it drove me insane till I stopped playing it a couple hours into the game), and X-2 (PS2) which... ugh... if you played it, you know what I mean. The opening song (not the video itself, only the *song* that was playing with it), Real Emotion, was probably the greatest highlight of the game.
I'm surprised there aren't more fans out there who loved FF5. There seems to be more fans of the game amongst the die-hard Final Fantasy fans more than anything else (I mean per capita, in relation to the number of people who have a favorite Final Fantasy game). Oh well, it's all good if we all enjoy what we have and not let other people's opinions get to us, right? Because everybody is right.

Its hard for me to say wich one is the best. I loved all of them (even though NONE of them are on my top-ten list , except X-2). I voted for 8, not because of graphics, but because I LOVED the junction system. But its almost a tie with FF5, which is the one I had more fun. Here's my opinions on them, with my grades: FF1 (nes and PSX) = Boring and without storyline, but at least its challlenging. The PSX version is WAY better though, the storyline seems more complete. (nes = 3/10; PSX = 7/10) FF2 (nes and PSX) = Very good storyline and evolution system. Also, its less linear than the others. I loved the fact that this game seemed more like a SaGa game than a Final Fantasy (nes and PSX = 7/10) FF3 (nes) = Great game. The first to have GFs/summons/eidolons/whatever, and has a nice storyline too. Its a bit boring though. FF4 (Snes, PSX and GBA) = This game is great. Has a very good story and a great character development. Also its quite challenging for a Final Fantasy. But lets note that I HATE the american version of FF4 on the snes (called FF2 US) 'cause its too easy and censored. I also hate the GBA version 'cause its buggy, slow and easy. The PSX version is great, but has some nasty load time. (snes = 8; PSX = 7; GBA = 5) FF5 (snes and PSX) = Really good! Incredible game system (the most complete of all the series), great storyline that gets better near the end, its quite long and has some challenging bosses. I LOVE this game!! (snes and PSX = 9/10) FF6 (snes and PSX) = In my opinion, this one has the best storyline of all the series, great character development, and some more mature themes (like a character that tries to kill herself, the fact that the world gets destroyed, etc). Unfortunatelly, its too easy, and the second half of the game seems more amateurish (Kefka is just in a tower and seemed to have lost his personality!!). The PSX version is horrible though. (snes = 8; PSX = 4) FF7 (PSX) = THE most overrated one, this one is not as good as most people think. Ok, the story is great and Sephiroth is a great villain, but the game itself could be a LOT better. Many boring parts really ruins the fun, and the fact that the game is the easiest of all the FFs realy killed the game. Good game, but not great. (6/10) FF8 (PSX) = Great storyline, great characters and great battle system. Need I say more?? Yes! This game has the most fun boss battles on all the FFs!! (9/10) FF9 (PSX) = This one is really underrated... Most people seems to hate it, but I really don't know why. Has a nice battle sytem (that seems like FF4, but we can customize the abilities of the chars) and great characters. The storyline is a bit iffy, but gets A LOT better on CD 3. A solid game!! (8/10) FF10 (PS2) = Almost as fun as algebra... They added a nice battle system, but not enough strong enemies to challenge us. The game is too easy, and our characters pratically become gods in the end, making the boss battles a bit boring. The game has a nice storyline, but its just not fun enough... (5/10) FFX-2 (ps2) = Ok, this one feels like a Britney Spears show, and its almost as good!! I don't need to say anything else, neh? (3/10)

Ultima: Then you should definitely buy Final Fantasy Anthology! FF6 have a little difference to the sounds (similar to using an emulator with a sound core that isn't quite SNES-accurate), but both games are in their original formats, and the extra features for FF6 make the game worth getting. psicomaniaco: You mention a bunch of the games being too easy, but what about FF9? It would've been in my top Final Fantasy games, but it didn't make it *because* it was way too easy. I wasn't going to worry about the easiness of it as I was playing (cuz the storyline, music, and customization were quite enjoyable), but the final straw was the final boss. First I beat him normally. Then when I thought it was too easy, I used a gameshark to delete all my items, including all my characters' equipment (except weapons, which can't be unequipped, only changed, and I did switch to the weakest ones I had). Then I fought the final boss like that, and he still went down with ease. Hell, I didn't even do any major leveling up during the game.

Although a bunch of people hated FF9, I personally found it enjoyable. It actually was kinda easy -- I just finished replaying it a few days ago. I admit, I leveled a bit much (ended the game with Zidane around level 80), but found it was totally unnecessary, as most enemies gave little to no trouble, so much so that I could imagine still having an easy time at probably 15-20 levels lower. The final boss, I didn't have such an easy time with, but it still wasn't horrendously difficult either. Just a lot of bad luck every time I played him xD
I'll try FF6 when I get around to it =]
