I'll play FF9 again and try my best to keep my mind clear. I think after all these years, it's collected enough dust. I can't recall if it has compatibility issues on pSX, but if not it'll be the first FF I play all the way through on pSX. If it does have problems, I can always play it on my PS2 (when my roommate isn't playing his damn XBox 360... internet won't run on PC and 360. Even with proper settings on the PC, 360 hogs the internet completely... ... ... Sorry, needed to get that rant out). Ultima: Just so you know, FF5 is a *lot* more difficult than FF6 (FF5 on SNES... I can't recall if the PSX version has the same difficulty or not) and seems to be longer than FF6 if you count the need to level up (which you'll be doing at some points)... especially for some good side-items (like Shiva... beating her without at least one Mage Knight is such a pain), much of which are optional anyway. Figured I'd mention those couple points in case they affect your decision on which one to play first.

psicomaniaco: You mention a bunch of the games being too easy, but what about FF9? It would've been in my top Final Fantasy games, but it didn't make it *because* it was way too easy. I wasn't going to worry about the easiness of it as I was playing (cuz the storyline, music, and customization were quite enjoyable), but the final straw was the final boss. First I beat him normally. Then when I thought it was too easy, I used a gameshark to delete all my items, including all my characters' equipment (except weapons, which can't be unequipped, only changed, and I did switch to the weakest ones I had). Then I fought the final boss like that, and he still went down with ease. Hell, I didn't even do any major leveling up during the game. Yeah, FF9 is also easy, but its just that FF7 and 6 are WAY easier. The lack of challenge on FF9 didn't bothered me as much as FF6 and 7. Figured I'd mention those couple points in case they affect your decision on which one to play first. I have to agree. FF5 is a superb game, and one of the hardest ones on the series. Also, the game system is on the job system (like FF1), but there are LOOOOTS of jobs here, and you can change them at any time. If you haven't played it yet, please do so. Oh, and the PSX version is the same as the snes one. Same challenge, same songs, same graphics... Just play the snes version, it'll be faster anyway!

At least in FF7 if you reached level 98 or 99, the final battle with Sephiroth was harder (well, his HP increases, which does make the battle a *little* more difficult). Oh, and the PSX version is the same as the snes one. Same challenge, same songs, same graphics... Just play the snes version, it'll be faster anyway! Yeah, I remembered that the songs, graphics, etc were the same, but I wasn't 100% certain if Squaresoft tweaked the difficulty or not (I was pretty sure they didn't, but I didn't want to make a statement I wasn't 100% certain about).

This happens only on the US version, BTW. BTW, I don't think you should measure the challenge of a game just by the final boss. I mean, FF5 is a hard game, but the final boss is very easy. FF9's final boss is really easy, but the game has some challenging parts, something that doesn't happen on FF7.

I wasn't judging FF9 by the final boss fight. As I said in my initial post on the subject, that was just the last straw. I didn't find any parts of the game to be difficult at all. A little tedious at times, but not difficult. Besides, I was in a phase at that time where I was looking for an RPG that actually had some kind of decent challenge to it and wasn't having much luck. FF5 was about the only game in which the challenge appealed to me.

If you need challenging games, look for some non-FF games. The SaGa games are quite hard (SaGa Frontier 1 has a great challenge. And its not a bad game IMHO). Also, some snes games like Live a Life, Bahamuth Lagoon and Seiken Densetsu 3 really shows that square can do some hard games.

Bahamut Lagoon was an awesome game that I found and played later, and did provide a decent challenge. Seiken Densetsu 3... I grabbed the game and translation patch, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. I have yet to try the SaGa Frontier games, mainly because I keep forgetting to look for them. Never heard of Live a Life.
I certainly don't get my RPG-fix from only Final Fantasy games. I love a lot of different RPG and Strategy games. It just so happens that the Final Fantasy series holds at least 10 games that I love. Shining Force, Arc the Lad, Fire Emblem, Suikoden, Tales... all are series that I love playing.

I wasn't going to reply here now, but 'cmon, you mentionned Shining Force, so I HAVE to say something here, as this was one of my favorite series ever. I love Shining Force soo much that the only reason I still have my old Game Gear is because of SF Gaiden 1, 2 and 3. I also have the original Shining Force CD, and I still have my Saturn so I can play Shining Force 3! I just LOOOVE them! Never heard of Live a Life. Get it. Its a very good game. Trust me! I think the hardest console RPG I've ever played was Phantasy Star 2. Are you familiar with this series?

Ahh yes... add that to my list of favorite series. Ever play it on the Sega Master System? Fun stuff. I know how it is with Shining Force. I bought the PS2 ones (Shining Force Neo and Shining Tears) only to find out that while they're intended to be part of the series... they didn't fit at all. I was so vastly disappointed. But Sega CD and Sega Saturn... I also have those and the respective games. Imagine how pissed I was when I first found out that they wouldn't be releasing the second and third parts of Shining Force 3! Words cannot describe my rage. I have Phantasy Star Online for Gamecube, and it was more interesting than I thought it would be. At least it can be played offline (I never was very big on online gaming).

I've never gotten into online gaming either, and I loved the original Phantasy Star on the Master System. Still play it sometimes on MEKA. None of the subsequent Phantasy Stars ever really matched up for me, despite their greater complexity. Never tried any of the online ones, though, even for playing offline.

I can't believe you still have MEKA (I do too). It's pretty much an obsolete emulator, now that some of the best sega emulators run SMS games too. I'd almost recommend you *don't* ever try Phantasy Star Online... it'll leave a bad taste in your mouth with Phantasy Star in general.

Is MEKA really obsolete? Although I don't have it for my main SMS emulator, I don't think so... These SEGA emulators you're talking about aren't very focused on the SMS; they tend to be more accurate on emulating Genesis/Mega Drive, mainly...

Well, I guess it is obsolete in a way, in that it was mostly developed as a DOS application, and it's only comparatively recently that Omar has been working on Windows and Linux versions. But it's just plain _fun_ as compared with some other emus... ;-D

I'm not saying that by being obsolete that it isn't as good. I'm just saying that most people use the newer emulators now. I personally like MEKA very much.

I guess we're getting a little off topic here...
Isn't it a little weird putting Final Fantasy 12 in the poll?
